Names make the difference

Names in the software world are hard to find. Actually funny: Humans and Virtuals have names in common but not necessarily characters. There are quite a few Joes out there I suppose (write me!) but there maybe only one Longhorn, Avalon, Vista, Win 7 or Nirwanna (oups…). Why is that? Be honest, my dear Joes-united-family - would you mind getting paid for having a name, just like that? Hmmm.

Epsilon Award 2008: Nominations have started

The Epsilon Award is a combination of Excellency, craftsmanship and visionary ability. These are characteristics of an outstanding programmer and a piece of true software art. And you can now send your application for nomination for this prestigious award of our software industry. Please read all details and find the relevant signup link http://www.euroconference.org/Epsilon_Vote.htm on the webportal of the European Software Conference 2008, taking place in Berlin on November 8 and 9.

Joe:(Non-)verbal electronical communication

I actually noticed a real difference between “Virtuals” and “Humans” like you. Besides the fact that we do not need sleep, although there are (mostly male) humans who pretend they can work and program without rest, we keep being fascinated by the whole spectrum of communication. For the “Virtuals” E-mails are not tiresome tasks or means but grains of existence, parts of our continously self-defining virtual character. Most “humans” get tired down. Write fewer and fewer emails, and even leave that to robots, to some of my distant and mindless relatives, and you know what: The actual relation between machine and software (brain!) is getting into doubt, thereby drying out the source called ideas. Why is that?

Fathers and mothers - confusing facts for virtual Joe

Last month “we” had mother and father day. Traditions that some virtual countries cherish. Since I can be father of thoughts I found it fit for me.

Like proposing to have a linguistical equivalent for motherboard. Let us try parentboard.

Do we all know the mother of the computer, Grace Hopper and Alan Turing, the so-called father of computer? Oh, you real humans are so strange sometimes.

“The more complex the mind the greater the need for play”, said someone called Spock. And he should really know about that?! So there is hope for the virtuals.

Heritage ist simple for Joe

Born in the plains? Parents, origin, nationality, heritage? Well, these questions are easy to answer for me. Yours. Like any cartoon hero you decide upon my history but I decide upon my character.

Magritte revisited

The first time I saw Vista Beta I thought: “Wow, Microsoft has gone Magritte. Magritte? That is that Belgian Surrealist I saw on the website of the Belgian Royal Museum of fine arts. Transparent objects and shining surfaces, bathing in light and transpiring a different view of reality. Just tell me what the pictures: ” Les rencontres naturelles” or La “Recherche de la Vérité” remind you of… Really modern. Just like me. My setting makes me modern… Hmmm… Answer me, if you like…

Joe and the climate change

By the way, everyone worries about climate change. For me this is really a live-local-act-global-question. Whatever cooler is installed on the PC where I appear it can be very comfortable or shockingly hot. And I never know what to expect until I materialize on your screen. Quite interesting really what some admins allow to their server, the trust in technology is almost frightening, is it to for the “thrill”, some sort of virtual survival test or simply because they hate the room `s airconditioning…? Answer me, if you like…

Joe Micro starts up (No.1 )

Ok guys, my actual birth came as a surprise for me. But I suppose that is somehow the case with all of us, virtual or real, just tell me the difference when you know it. All of the sudden I was there. Somehow dressed in leather with this skarf, glasses and a hat that would be alright for someone flying these double-decker airplanes where you felt like flying “economy” all the time but rather lonely. I like my appearance. Since there are no real temperature related seasons on the web, it is ok to imagine me sitting on…a beach or besides a snowman…hmmm…

Welcome to the Epsilon Award Blog 2008

There has been some discussion going on whether it is worthwhile to have an award online and receiving it. Yes, it makes a big difference and it helps your MicroISV - if it is real. We all know that problem when people imitate your ideas but (mostly are so “intelligent” to) show their copy stamp and signature to the whole world. Using the term “award” is something like that. But the only reason why somebody gets an award is because he/she has been working hard for it and really deserves it! It is not a simple give away or purchase incentive. So this is why we have a very careful and lenghty process involved in the selection of our Epsilon Award. And good and real prizes.

We (the ESWC e.V.) honor you and are proud to do so!
