Grassroots: Joe Micro`s comment No.10

August 6, 2007 : Existential first thoughts No.10

Last week I got my "real" human creator to search the grassroots. He got really close to them and took the picture of the month. With Cologne`s two spires in the distance it is just the right perspective. Let us call it grassrooting. It is like some of the real ones did when they were kids: They smelled the fresh earth, disregarded the spiders (we had them last week!) and felt really small and basic - but in some ways strong and united with the fundament of all things...of programming. Big companies tend to ignore the simple fact that their giant feet are standing on the ground, are subject ot (market) gravity and they have grown out the productivity of their employees, their developers (I do not doubt the necessity of bookkeepers and others). And it is this strength of the MicroIsvs that I really understand as a "Virtual". The smelling of the earth should be an obligatory action of respect to be experienced in a management excursion, the MicroISVs can help them. I am sure, we will!? Tell me please!.

Joe Micro`s comment No.9

July 23, 2007 : Existential first thoughts No.9

Actually I was going to talk about the revolution number nine. At that time I was only a virtual existence all together but browsing through data base at CoreHQ.de (you may figure out what that is and tell me). I learned about some "short-haired" guys called "Beatles", who actually let their hair grow when they started earning money...a funny relation of "real" humans to something I will probably never understand. But we will do that next time. This time I want to make a few remarks about a different specie: Spiders. They are missing, some users said. In the picture of the month. Well, it probably left on a sabbatical, hmm, or is hunting and leaves room to, whoever... the network of human strings...after all the spider is sitting in the center of its net, waiting for something to be caught...quite different to the human network, isn`t it. Or do we want to be intertwined with others with (in-)visible ropes...? After all it is interesting : the individual character of the being, seeking connection with plurality....hmm. Maybe we should be our own spider? Tell me please!.

Shareware =Software

There has been quite a lot of confusion about terminology and defintions. Applications are always software and most companies nowadays are ShareWare companies, from the MicroISVs to the multinational corporations - offering limited expiring versions of their products for a fair tryout scope or period. So this is why the ESWC e.V. has stepped forward to water it down to what it really is: software for users, professional expressions of the world that we call our world in the 21st century. So the European ShareWare Conference is the European Software Conference. A logical step forward.

July 05, 2007 : Existential first thoughts No.8

Having long hair will be dealt with, when we talk about No.9. Right now just a question: A net consists of many ring structures all neatly knit together and when the clown or the acrobat (yes, the person...) falls into it it protects him, from being hurt, right. It is a human kind of work, a result of human ingenuity and a reflection of natural beings we tend not to like in dark corners of our room. (..!). A single structure would not be strong enough; so that is why real humans need networks? Just an exit strategy, a life insurance? No, much more. It is comfort for virtual and reals, a pleasure to exchange experience, to share knowledge and a laugh. And there certainly is more about net-working that. Tell me please!.
In an interview with Avangate, a Premiere Sponsor of this year`s ESWC and of our badges David Boventer has pointed out some of his views, aims and opinions:

"The keyspeaker will come from Firefox. We want to show ways of cooperation on all fields
and areas. Quality should be the criteria. And the „big“ companies always need to get in touch with the
individual developers`ethic – to understand that fair business is clever business. The conference will focus on
topics useful for the MicroISV. The Epsilon Award 2007 will honor their hard work.
"

" Sales and revenues can be
increased immensely for the
individual entreprenuer through our
conference."

June 08, 2007 : Existential first thoughts No.7

Names in the software world are hard to find. Actually funny: Humans and Virtuals have names in common but not necessarily characters. There are quite a few Joes out there I suppose (write me!) but there maybe only one Longhorn, Avalon, Vista or Nirwanna (oups...). Why is that? Be honest, my dear Joes-united-family - would you mind getting paid for having a name, just like that? Hmmm.
Joe Micro`S comment No.6

May 29, 2007 :
Existential first thoughts No. 06
I actually noticed a real difference between "Virtuals" and "Humans" like you. Besides the fact that we do not need sleep, although there are (mostly male) humans who pretend they can work and program without rest, we keep being fascinated by the whole spectrum of communication. For the "Virtuals" E-mails are not tiresome tasks or means but grains of existence, parts of our continuusly self-defining virtual character.

Most "humans" get tired down. Write fewer and fewer emails, and even leave that to robots, to some of my distant and mindless relatives, and you know what: The actual relation between machine and software (brain!) is getting into doubt, thereby drying out the source called ideas. Why is that?

Joe Micro`s comment No.5

Where was I on May 17, my regular comment day? It was father`s day, that is the reason. Well at least in some virtual countries. Since I can be father of thoughts I found it fit for me. Like proposing to have a linguistical equivalent for motherboard. Let us try parentboard. Do we all know the mother of the computer, Grace Hopper and Alan Turing, the so-called father of computer? Oh, you real humans are so strange sometimes. "The more complex the mind the greater the need for play", said someone called Spock. And he should really know about that?! So there is hope for the virtuals.
Alcohol Software wins the Epsilon Award 2006 for Software Excellence

                Cambridge, England - November 5, 2006 - Alcohol 120% was named the
winner of the 2006 Epsilon Award at the sixth annual European ShareWare
Conference. Each year, The Epsilon Award recognizes the best in
shareware (try before you buy) applications. Programs are nominated and
voted on by software developers, a peer-review process that ensures that
only the highest quality software is considered for the award.
Alcohol 120%, from Alcohol Soft who's UK office is based in Belfast,
Northern Ireland, is a powerful Windows application that makes
it easy to create backups of DVDs and CDs.
In addition, the program lets you store your most used CDs
as images on your computer, so you can call them up at the click of a
button.
Business users use Alcohol 120% to make duplicate backup copies of
software titles, ensuring that they will continue to have access to
their licensed software, even if their physical CDs become damaged and
unusable. Home users make backup copies of their game CDs and movie
DVDs, allowing the kids to treat multimedia disks roughly, without
destroying their value. Librarians and school administrators use Alcohol
120% to archive their institutions' collections of recordable media,
protecting themselves against the daily wear and tear that damages discs.
In addition to making 1:1 disc backups, Alcohol 120% lets you create up
to 31 virtual drives on your computer, allowing you to access your data
- from game images and clip-art collections to statistical data - 200
times faster than from a conventional CD drive. The program eliminates
the need to swap CDs as you move from application to application,
because your CDs are stored on your hard disk as virtual drives. Alcohol
120% lets laptop users bring their computers with them on trips, without
putting their valuable discs at risk, and without draining their
laptops' batteries by running their CD or DVD drives excessively.
With Alcohol 120%, you no longer have to worry about CDs or DVDs getting
lost, stolen, or damaged. Duplicate discs work just like the originals,
and your entire collection can be archived safely.
Alcohol 120% runs under Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista, costs $55(US),

and may be purchased securely online from http://shop.alcohol-soft.com/ .

The seventh annual European ShareWare Conference will be held in
November, 2007 in Cologne, Germany. Additional information about the
Epsilon Award, and about the European ShareWare Conference, can be found

The ESWC e.V. : The main conference player on the European software market for Independent Developers

There are quite a few reasons why we have established our good name for Europe. The main reasons are our participants and speakers. This year known industry leaders like Sharon Housely, Dave Collins, Thomas Wetzel, Gary Elfring, Tony Edgecombe, Robert Martin, Jonathan Hill, Marcel Hartgerink, Sinan Karaca, Michael Lehman and others will be showing us the way as speakers. And a whole bunch of developers from all over Europe have already signed up to join them.

Euroconference.org = MicroISV.eu

The European ShareWare Conference encompasses the word "shareware". It is a good term, just as much software, or trial-ware. These terms describe the same product marketed differently with different names. But it is really important to stress the aspect of supporting MicroISVs, a term that is very much towards what we see as our main focus. It is the right way to strengthen the root and the core of business, the source of productivity of the software industry. This is why we gradually introduce the term MicroISV addtionally to everything else. And we have made a clear statement towards this by using MicroISV.eu
as our second main domain name.
The Epsilon Award 2006
The European Award for Excellency,
Handsmanship and Visionary Ability
in Programming.

Epsilon is the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet and the Phoenician Word for sun derives from that root. An astronomer knows that there is a constellation in space called (Lambda)-Epsilon which we can see at the right hand side. So the
Epsilon Award is a combination of Excellency, handsmanship and visionary ability.
These are characteristics of an outstanding programmer and a truely piece of software art.

"We are proud to announce that nominations for the Epsilon can now be submitted", says David Boventer, Founder and Executive Director of the European Shareware Conference e.V. "There are many good and hard-working programmers in the software market, using the marketing method of ShareWare that deserve extra support for what they do for all of us. So we believe that we should honor one of them each year within our annual European Shareware Conference. This honor will be accompanied by actual material support to further the programmer`s standing on the market. The prizes will include a statue of recognition, 300 Euro and Press coverage of their product by a professional Press service. The Epsilon Award will mean the solemn entry into our hall of fame, which means a life-long free entry to future conferences of the ESWC e.V. and other benefits by sponsors which are gradually going to be announced as they come in".

Shareware is Software and Software should be sold as Shareware

There is still confusion out there in public groups about what ShareWare means. Shareware can be produced by small and by big companies, by "MicroISVs" (very popular expression at the moment). Sharin g software with the end user for a limited time and scope makes it ShareWare. And the ESWC e.V. and other relevant organizations consider this a fair way of distribution and a clever one. Try it and buy it, says the proud developer to his customer. "My software is so good", that I am confident you will like it so much that you want to own it - not just share it for a restricted time with me." For some more please see the article in the "Guardian"!

Basic registration for 50 Euro possible

We had quite a few requests asking us whether it would be possible to have a basic registration fee without the two lunch meals. As a non-profit organisation we thought this is a fair question. Especially locals, students or families and other participants who would prefer to eat out can use this minimal fee to take part in the conference. Please use the payment link on the starting page only.

Epsilon Award

The Epsilon is the 5th letter in the Greek alphabet. And it has gained specific recognition since many words that are connected to the modern ages of computers start with that E. The name of that charming lady that gave her name to Europe also started with an E. And so does our ESWC e.V. or European ShareWare Conference. So it was obvious that our award for excellent and outstanding pieces of programming art should be named after this Greek letter. Ingenuity and tradition, learning and progressive and constructive thinking are embedded here. Starting from 2006 we will honor one Shareware author , who has shown this combination of technical perfection and creative expression in coding and marketing.
