Message by
the Governing Mayor of Berlin,
Klaus Wowereit, for the participants of the
8th European Software Conference (ESWC) on November 8 and 9 2008 in Berlin.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 8th European
Software Conference here in Berlin. Germany’s capital has undergone radical
structural change in the almost twenty years since the fall of Wall. While Berlin’s
economy was long considered the “sick man” of the republic, the German
capital city and the surrounding state of Brandenburg now number among Europe’s
most innovative regions. One pillar of the economy is the 12,000 companies and
roughly 150,000 employees active in the media and communications sector in Berlin-Brandenburg.
The traditional media sector, the digital economy, and the telecommunications
industry enjoy close ties here in the region. All of these benefit from the
creative potential, the cultural abundance, and the unique concentration of
academic, scientific, and research institutions in and around Berlin.
Fifty different media and communications-related training and university programs
for around 22,000 students ensure that highly qualified employees are always
available. Modern media also enjoy greater acceptance in Berlin than anywhere
else in Germany: roughly 70 percent of Berlin’s population use the Internet,
while 94 percent use mobile communication. We are at the cutting edge not only
in terms of politics and media; the new generation of Internet users lives in
Berlin, the “Web 2.0 capital.”
All over the world, the success of a given metropolis is determined by three
factors: talent, technology, and tolerance. After years of upheaval and painful
changes, Berlin is excellently positioned in all three areas. Our colleges and
universities are attractive training grounds for talent; innovative technology
products from many forward-looking sectors come from Berlin; and openness and
internationality characterize the social climate.
In other words, your meeting is taking place in a very favorable environment.
